How Much Does a Level 2 Home Charger Cost? Hardware, Installation and Electricity by State

DOE hardware and installation ranges, plus home charging cost in every state.

How Much Does a Level 2 Home Charger Cost? Hardware, Installation and Electricity by State – MoovX

Quick answer: The U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center puts a residential Level 2 charger at about $380–$690 for hardware (citing a Rocky Mountain Institute report). Installation runs about $1,300 per connector before labor and permits (citing an NLR/INL report). Labor is usually the largest single expense (AFDC). The federal 30C charger credit no longer applies to home chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. After that, what you pay is your electricity rate. The state table below shows it.

Installation

  • About $1,300 per connector for residential Level 2, not including labor and permitting (AFDC citing NLR/INL).
  • The cost goes up with panel upgrades, long wire runs, trenching and local permits. ChargePoint notes that 48–50 A settings "may require" a panel upgrade. Installation must meet local codes and be done by a licensed electrician (AFDC).

Federal tax credit (30C): ended for new installs

The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (30C) isn't allowed for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, under Public Law 119-21 (IRS FAQ; 26 U.S.C. §30C(i)). Some installer cost pages still mention the credit. Ignore them.

What charging costs in your state

These are EIA average residential prices. August 2026 figures are preliminary (EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, accessed Oct 25, 2026).

The cost per 1,000 miles is an estimate. It assumes 3.5 mi/kWh, no charging losses and a flat average rate, and it leaves out time-of-use rates and fixed fees. For your own car, use the MoovX charging-cost tool. Each state name links to that state's charging cost and electricity price.

FAQ

  • Do I need Level 2? Not always. Level 1 can cover short daily drives. The DOE puts Level 1 at about 5 miles of range per hour of charging (assuming 1.9 kW) and Level 2 at about 25 miles per hour. Eight hours on Level 1 adds about 40 miles for a mid-size EV (AFDC).
  • Does a NACS car need a different charger? See the NACS adapter guide.
  • Is there still a federal tax credit? Not for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026 (IRS).
  • Can I back up my charger with a battery? See portable power stations and home batteries.
